The WordPress XSPF Player Plugin

[Spanish]

Warning: Comments are closed here. For support, please go to the forum.

I wanted my WordPress site to have some MP3 background music, but didn’t found any suitable plugin for it:

My webhosting server has little space, and cannot store tracks online. I just wanted a flash player or alike to be embedded into my pages which reads mp3 files via HTTP anywere on the internet. The XSPF web player does exactly that, and is licensed GPL.

I have developed this tiny plugin to allow WordPress pages to have background MP3 music embedding this player. You can see the player on the right sidebar. Just press play and music should start playing.

Hope you enjoy it.

    Hello!

This looks super fun! Does it use up a lot of bandwith?

How many people can turn it on at the same time?

  12. [United Kingdom] Lozzie says:

Also, I am liking this more and more, is there a place on the net where one can find tracks to link their players to? I suppose, like a promotional portal for musicians?

    (6) It takes a lot of bandwith if you allocate the MP3 in your own server, and have a los of visits to your web site ;) .
    (7) You can find free online MP3 music in sites like http://magnatune.com/

  16. [Spain] Boriel says:

    A note:
    You can embed the player xspf_player::start();

  17. [United Kingdom] Lozzie says:

    Thanks Boriel

I have got the player on my site, but tracks are not playing, & playlist is not visible. I have made sure that I have the full URL of both the player and the mp3’s, but so far nothing..

  18. [Malaysia] winterwish says:

trying removing the www prefix in your player url at the option tab.

  19. [United States] SmockLady says:

I have the player on my site and I can’t see the playlist and nothing is playing. I read the two posts just previous to mine and winterwish’s suggestion didn’t work for me. I like this and I really want it to work. Thanks. Where does the playlist.php file go? I wonder if that is my problem.

  20. [Australia] Lisa says:

Mine just keep on saying that it’s “loading the playlist” despite having uploaded my mp3 file…

  21. [Australia] Lisa says:

Smocklady: I think I got it. Unzip the files containing “xspf_player/playlist.php” & “xspf_player.php”. Upload both files into plugin, with “xspf_player/playlist.php” as a whole (including the “xspf_player” folder).

  22. [Spain] Boriel says:

Lisa(16): That’s right. You have to uncompress all the bundled files and folders.

  23. [United Kingdom] Lozzie says:

Well now I am really confused.

I have removed the www from the complete url to the player (.swf file)

I have re organised the xspf plugin as Lisa describes in post 16 above.

I have made a media folder in my blog folder (go2malawi.com/blog/media/ ) and put an mp3 in there. I have made sure that all are accessible, but still the player is saying ‘loading playlist’.

I noticed on the player download page at sourceforge, it speaks of editing a .xspf file for the playlist. I presume that with this player plugin for WordPress that I do not need to do this?

I have been in and out of all the files and dont have enough experience yet with PHP to find the missing link. HELP!

  24. [Australia] Lisa says:

Here’s what I did (mostly as said in the readme.txt):

    1) Unzip the files & transfer to the “plugins folder” as mentioned in #16. In your FTP is looks like this: http://myfilestash.com/userfiles/bohemianphilosophy/xspf1.png

    2) Download the flash player from http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net and put it into a directory of your web server. Ignore all the instructions on that sourceforge.net page. It is irrelevant to this plugin.

    3) Unzip the downloaded “xspf_player”. Look for a file with “swf” extension. Upload this particular file to any folder you like. Say, you named the folder “music”.

    4) Activate the plugin at wp-admin.

    5) Go to the Options page (XSPF Player Options) and set up the absolute (complete) URL path to your player.
    For instance: http://www.johndoe.com/music/music_player.swf

    6) Go to the Managements page (XSPF Player Management) and add some url songs to the database. For instance, say, you also uploaded your song in the same “music” folder like #3. So, it should be: http://www.johndoe.com/music/lalala.mp3

    7) Invoke the player anywhere into your template pages using:

I’m not sure about removing or keeping the www. Try both & see how it turns out :-)

  25. [United States] Xyth says:

Removing the WWW in the url did the trick to make the 1.5 to 1.6 upgrade work. Nice job.

  26. [Spain] Boriel says:

The problem of whether to put “www.” or not in the player URL is related to the Wordpres URI setup!
You have to use the same host name in both the player and wordpress URLs.
This will be fixed to be done automatically in next release.

  27. [Canada] Biggworm says:

Hi , I really like this plugin but I’ve got a small problem. None of the tables were created in my WordPress database. Any ideas? thanks for any help you can offer.

  28. [Spain] Boriel says:

Biggworm (22): I don’t know how skilled are you in WordPress. I’ve received several mails saying the same. Most of the time it was they didn’t activate the plugin in the plugins panel. Have you activated the plugin? (You should see, in the Options panel, a new option called “XSPF PLayer”).

If so, then there should be something in your system preventing the plugin to create a database.
Did you change the wp prefix? Which PHP version, WP Version and MySQL do you have?

  29. [Canada] Biggworm says:

    Hello Boriel
Thank you for he quick response. I’m no PHP programmer but I did activate the plugin, I wish it was only that:lol:. The version of PHP is 4.3.11, WP is 1.5.2, MySQL is 4.0.24-standard and WP is the database prefix. I don’t mind creating them manually through PHPMyAdmin if you can tell me the # of fields and such. Thanks again.

  30. [Canada] Biggworm says:

    Hello Boriel,
Thanks for the email yesterday, your willingness to help is great. I took a long shot late last night when I got home and diasbled the XSPF plugin (Version 1.6) and deleted the files from the WP plugins folder. I installed version 1.2 and the tables were created in the WP database  and then I upgraded to 1.6. All seems to be working fine. I’d like to give some explanation why but I’ll leave that to the pros like you.

  31. [Germany] johnny says:

Thanks for your fantastic work! I have one suggestion: It would be cool to have an extra field for sorting the playlist via WP’s backend. I want to use the player for my podcasts, whenever I add the latest show (the new one) though, it is the last in the playlist. To make people get the new one first, I’d need the reverse order or even better: manual sorting.

Any easy way to do this myself without touching the DB?

  32. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Biggworm (25): This is really puzzling… :?
I cannot imagine how it could be working then… I’m almost sure is about PHP4.3.x, but I cannot test it. Both my server and me have PHP 5.0.x

  33. [Spain] Boriel says:

johnny (26): I don’t know what’s the WP backend :? . But the new version will allow to specify the order for each track on each category, so this could be useful to you to. On the other hand, you can workaround this with version 1.6, an sort the songs in alphabetical ASCII order. The hack is this:

Edit the file playlist.php, and add the following code just before line #24:

    $query .= ‘ ORDER BY `title` ASC’;

If you want the reverse order, replace “ASC” for “DESC”.

  34. [Germany] johnny says:

Boriel, thanks for the hint, I guess the ASC/DESC trick will do! With “WP backend” I meant the Wordpress admin area.

  35. [Germany] johnny says:

    Works like a charm, gracias!

  36. [Malaysia] winterwish says:

Thanks boriel, I love the track order feature. You da man

  37. [Austria] waitnoise says:

hi. thanx for the great plugin :)

i installed the new 2.0 version
but there is a little problem
when i update the settings in the options panel, i get an error ’site not found’
the url is: ‘/wp-admin/&updated=true’ i think there is some missing?!?
is this a bug or a problem in my configuration?
    thx for help

    greets from austria
    waitnoise

  38. [Spain] Boriel says:

waitnoise (32): the URL should be /wp-admin/options-general.php?page=xspf_player.php
Something is going wrong. When you enter the Options panel and click on XSPF Player, which address shows in the navigation URL bar?

    Should be
    http:///wp-admin/options-general.php?page=xspf_player.php

  39. [Austria] waitnoise says:

    yep
    http://www.mydomain.com/wprootdir/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=xspf_player.php
thats my link. i renamed the original ‘wordpress’ directory, i hope this is no problem.

  40. [China] quakemachine says:

thx nice plugin!but a little bug:
    $pagenum = ceil($from + 1/ $limit);
    maybe change to:

    $pagenum = ceil(($from + 1) / $limit);
    then show real page number.

  41. [Spain] Boriel says:

quakemachine (35): Thanks! ;) In fact it’s been already fixed for version 2.1-beta. It also has background color picker setup, a little improved track panel edition and a better (I hope!) player mode selection.

    Stay tuned!

  42. [Switzerland] el tiki says:

    Nice Plugin!
didn’t manage to get it to work though :? i had everything activated in the plugin-section, setup the url’s to songs on my server … but there allways were 2 problems i got:
    1. the player showed “undefined” (probably the playlist? i tried calling it with ‘xspf_player::start(category-item);’ and with ‘xspf_player::start(mycategoryname);’ )
    2. I was not able to change the absolute URL to another folder on my server, it allways “jumped back” to the default installation-path …

I like this idea a lot … guess I’ll just wait for a while ’till the next release.

Thanks alot for doing such cool stuff! :!:

  43. [Spain] Boriel says:

    el tiki (37):

    1) Use version 2.0 or higher (don’t know which one do you have, but soppose it’s 2.0)

    2) Try first xspf_player::start(); or better, just press play in the preview you will see in the Options panel. The music should start playing. If it does, then the URL is not the problem. If you want to change the URL, it should be done just before pressing the update button.

    3) Try using <?php xspf_player::start(’categor_name’); ?> in your template. You have to use one of the categories you defined in the admin panel and make sure there’s at less a song defined on it.

    Try this, and tell me.

  44. [Switzerland] el tiki says:

    thx a lot!
    everything works just fine now
(actually i made a stoopid mistake, placing the 2 folders into my plugins-folder, instead of placing the plugin-file directly into the folder next to the folder with the .swf-files, duh, stoopid me )

  45. [Japan] nk says:

in my xspf_player preview, i got the “movie not loaded” message, i have downloaded the player and put it in the plugin’s folder, umm whats wrong?

  46. [Spain] Boriel says:

nk (40): You needn’t download the player anymore (I forgot to remove this from the Readme.txt), as for version 2.0 the player is bundled with the plugin.

Uncompress the xspf_player.php and the xspf_player FOLDER (and all its content) in the wordpress plugin directory. This should be enough. In the Options panel you should see the player.

On the other hand, if you changed the player URL, select the player mode again to reget it. The player URL should appear now authomatically.

    Try this and tell me.

  47. [Japan] quakemachine says:

version 2.1 download url will be:

    http://www.boriel.com/files/xspf_player-2.1.zip

    8O

  48. [China] quakemachine says:

and you will change line 266:
    ” >

    to:
    >

    (no more the last “)

or you track list admin will look wrong.
    Sorry for Spam…

  49. [Spain] Boriel says:

    quakemachine:

(42): You’re right. I didn’t update the URL, but, unluckily, people who download “The lastest version” did download v2.1 as this link always point to the latest version. :?

(43): Thanks for your observation. I forgot removing the ‘”‘. This might cause a glitch in the track admin panel :( . People who download v2.1 Before reading this comment, should download it again.

No problem with Spam ’cause you intention was good.

  50. [Canada] annie says:

The media player works very well! I was wondering if I could re-arrange the order of the playlist. For example, I would like the first song on the list to be the most recently uploaded song. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
    -annie

  51. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Annie:
(45): Since version 2.0, songs order are available. You have to define a Category (a set of songs), and put some tracks there (edit every song you want in the category and tag it). Once done that, edit the category (again) and click on the Order button to rearrange the songs order.

Finally, tell the xspf_player you want to play a Category-set, not all the songs. E.g. let’s suppose you have a category named Celt Music, then you should invoke the player with:
    <?php xspf_player::start(’Celt Music’);?>

    Hope this helps.

  52. [United States] Xyth says:

I’m noticing a message “transfering data from” remains after my webpage loads with version 2.1 installed. Does not do that with version 1.6. Perhaps something is not closing properly? Exhibits the same behavior on the admin page for the plugin.

  53. [United States] Xyth says:

Reloaded 1.6, I was wrong, that shows same message on Firefox. Does not show on IE6 however. If I disable the plugin the message stops. Minor issue, probably related to firefox 1.0.7 Great plugin! Thanks again.

  54. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Xynth:
    (46) & (47):
It’s not a problem with firefox, but with the Macromedia Firefox plugin. Once your page is loaded, the plugin connects to your server (again) to load your playlist. That’s why you read “transfering data from…”. Click play and you will read other messages coming from the flash library.

It simply happens that once the playlist is loaded, the flash player library does not remove the “transfering data from…” message. ;)

I mean: It never deletes any message, just print the last action executed, and leave the message there until a new action come into place.

The IE implementation does not do this, I think.

  55. [United States] Tim says:

This is a great plugin and pretty easy to get running.

I have one small problem. The playlist is not displayed unless I click on the player
or the play button. On your site, I notice that the playlist is displayed as soon as
the page is loaded. What am I doing wrong? Thanks,

  56. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Tim (50):
I cannot check it, because I don’t know your wordpress URL.

Anyway, you have to do nothing. If the music starts playing, then the plugin it’s working ok.
The playlist appears automatically. It’s a feature for version 1.6 or higher. Which version do you have?

Make sure you have v2.1, as it fixes some bugs and add new features.

    Hello Boriel
A nice “little” plugin you offer to the WP-community, thank you very much!
Everything works fine except for one funny but unbearable thing: the music plays far too fast!
At least at doubled speed :?
What can I do? I have XSPF v2.1, and WP v.1.5.2, running on IE6 (I did not yet test it on Firefox)

  59. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Annalena (53):
This is an issue of the Fabrizio’s Flash player. It doesn’t seems to support low bit/rate encoding (probably 64 kbps).

Resample your mp3 file with a higher (at least 128Kbps) sample rate with some utility, and try again.

  60. [Switzerland] Annalena says:

Hey there, thanks for the great plugin, but i am having difficulity organizing the playlist? Is there an option, i can’t seem to find it. Thanks in advance.

  64. [Spain] Boriel says:

    FuKIE (58):

I don’t understand what you mean by “Organizing the playlist” :( Anyway, the playlist is managed in the “Manage” section of your admin panel (Manage=>Xspfplayer). There you add the mp3 URL’s. If you want to sort them in some order, you have to create a Category, put the songs into it, and rearrange the category order.

  65. [United States] Saint says:

I’m having the same problem as el tiki was having. I have ver 2.0 and I’m still getting the undefined. When you say “Try using in your template” Which template do you mean? I’m a noob when it comes to php… thanks in advance

  66. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Saint (60):
Upgrade to ver 2.1 is recommended.

Try this first test before anything else:

Uncompress the xspf_player.php and the xpsf_player folder (with all its content) in the plugins directory. Put some songs in your playlist (Manage section)
The go back to the Options panel, and press “Play” button in the preview mode. Music should start playing. If it does not, then you need to solve this before putting it in your template (the template is the skin you use in wordpress).

There seems to be a problem with your playlist. Mine is at:
    http://www.boriel.com/wp-content/plugins/xspf_player/playlist.php (click to view)

    Yours is at:
http://www.notchnbarrelconnection.com/wp-content/plugins/xspf_player/playlist.php (click, and got an error). This should not happen.

  67. [United States] Sheena says:

Is there a way to change the colors to match your WP theme?? :?:

  68. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Sheena (62):

    Nope. :(

Only the background color is changeable in the Options menu.
Current version of Fabrizio’s flash player does not allow color setup for other elements, except for the tiny-button mode, where everything is changeable (not yet implemented).

You can use the mode-button to match your bg color, and only the circled play button will appear.

  71. [Spain] Boriel says:

eric (64), (65): There’s no reason for this error. The only reason I can imagine for it to happen is you forgot to enable the plugin in the Plugins section of your wordpress admin panel, or you’re using WP version < 1.5 :(

big oops on my part, forgot that the plugin was not activated. thanks for a great player.

  73. [Venezuela] Dov MD says:

Hi Boriel (o puedo decir Hola tambien? jejeje)

I have a problem with ur plugin, i did everything i supposed to do and i don’t know why it doesn’t work.

I hope you could tell me, what happened. When i change the player url for the one that i download form sourceforge and update it it remains with the previous url; never took the one i write over! Even when i’m sure that it’s a valid url because i test it before.

Of course that the player is not working properly. OH! WHen i open the url of the player in a window i can play the music that there is in the examples of the player in sourceforge but in my page the player doesn’t work.

Hope you could help man, regards!

  75. [United States] Ravi says:

Hi there! I want to start off by saying thank you for such a great plugin…not only does it look great, it plays every song perfectly (including non 44.1KHZ encoded ones…wooh!). I just had one request…would it be possible to be able to call on the player and have it play only one song? I have implemented this currently by assigning each music file its own category, and then calling up 9 different instances of the player for each one (long story, dont ask). However, I anticipate this being cumbersome when I start to add more songs to my site…I guess what I’m asking is if there is a way you can add a feature such that the “slim” version of the module just plays one song? Thank you so much!

PS. Also, it is just me or is it impossible to change the dimensions of the “wide” player? Thanks in advance!

  76. [United States] Ravi says:

Ok, ignore my last comment. I figured out what I was doing wrong and got it working much better. Now my only question is how to alter the dimensions of the “wide” player? It seems tryign to do it via the options only affects the slim version. Thanks so much!

  77. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Ravi:

(70): Don’t know how did you manage to get it working better. Actually, to play just one song, you have to define a Category for it. But for upcoming version 2.2, player mode, songs, and parameters will be configurable on-the-flay in the <?php xspf_player::start(); ?> call parameters.

(71): It could be a bug, however, I’m trying it right now with version 2.1 (latest at this moment), and it’s working ok to me. :? When you change the dimensions and press Update button, the Preview in the options panel should change, reflecting the new size.

I have something to state clear to other people over there, that have been not very kind:

    1) This is Free Software. I don’t earn money for making it. I have my own work, and, as you can imagine, It’s my first priority. I make a living as a computer engineer, and thanks to it, I can afford this website and you can visit it.

    2) Don’t push me to make solve your problems. Be smarter, and PLEASE, TAKE YOUR TIME (not mine) trying to make it to work. It took me some time to develop this, and other plugins. I suppose your time is important, but mine is too (at less for me)

    3) If your comment is in that way, be sure it will be DELETED. This is FREE software. Which means you don’t have to pay for it, among many other things. Many people believe they’re entitled to demand my services or whatever. This is just a hobby.

    4) If I answered other people before you, it’s because their problem is easier to solve. Otherwise, I will answer everybody in *scrict* order.

Having said that, the best you can do when having a problem with the plugin is:

    1. Download *always* the latest plugin version. This plugin is for Wordpress 1.5.x. It won’t work for Wordpress 1.2 (some people have managed to do it so).
    2. I know install instructions (no time, sorry) are poor, but do please read the README.TXT and the comments here. They will save us lot of time.
    3. If this does not work, write me, but please describe your problem, what you do, how can you reproduce the error, what PHP version does your host have.
    4. Best of all: This is FREE software, you can contribute it in many ways (for example, writting a user guide. I will open a Wiki for this very soon stay tuned).

    Peace. :)

Excellent plugin, bro….really appreciate all the hard work you’ve put in to it.

If you don’t mind, I had the following suggestions/requests for enhancements:

    1) Persistence across pages of the blog. Eg, when the user first goes to the blog they get hit with the music…as they navigate to different pages, the player continues to play the song as opposed to having to load a new instance/song with each visit to a new page

    2) Ability to select categories/playlists “on-the-fly” while viewing the blog. This would allow users to customize the music to their “mood”.

    3) A browse option for uploading music. Instead of having to manually specify the URL, it would be great to have a “Browse” button that would help you load music to the server. A REALLY great option would be to have this browse go to folders on the server, as opposed to your own desktop. That way it could just create links to mp3 files already on your server in different file locations.

Thanks so much! Again, great plugin!!!!

I didn’t found out the problem in the given url (it looked ok and even worked when copying is into my browser :? , but it works now after this step! Just find the url in your browser and copy the whole address. I guess the http:// wasn’t in the basic url.

I also have the problem that I only see a ‘loading playlist’ message. Any idea how to solve this?

  109. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Tony (102):

No, the player always shows “Download song”. Even disabling this
options, users can simply download the song by it’s url
(http://…/filename.mp3). Just typing it on the navigator bar.

I can download it with many browsers, and you can’t avoid that. On IE
you can disable the right mouse button click, however,
this won’t solve the problem for tricky users. The only way to
prevent this is streaming the mp3 on the fly.

Apache (the web server) and many othe programs can do that. Then the
user can use a player like Winamp, to listen to it.

But finally, with totalrecord, they can save it anyway.

Try to change the source code (I’m investigating it too). At less to
make it a bit difficult. But it always be downloadble.

If I guess how to disable it in the source code (you can download it
    from Fabrizio’s site, http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net) I’ll let you
    know.

yes, enable the shuffle option. This should work as a random list.

    >Also, I’m interested in turning off the download this song option in the menu, and maybe having the artist/title scroll in the playlist window when using the extended window?
To prevent song download option to appear (smart users WILL ALWAYS be able to download a song -since it’s a feature of the HTTP protocol- using the browser itself), download the .swf versions of the players and overwrite them with the version on this url:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/51419

    >I like the size of the slim, but also need the track names to appear.
You can setup the player size in the options windows, however, the wide-list mode does not scroll. You’ll have to make a wider-size player.

  116. [United States] Crowspeaker says:

    Thanks!

Maybe I’ll try to make a cross between the slim and wide versions of the player.

What I want to do is embed the player at the top of my Sidebar, just as Boriel has done. Lisa did a fine job writing a How-To in comment #19, but ended with step 7 that said, “7) Invoke the player anywhere into your template pages using: …” and then nothing.

Invoke the player HOW? I chose WP’s “presentation” menu, “theme editor,” then selected the theme I’m using. I clicked the sidebar template and placed at the top of the file just under the first line of code . I hit enter. When I refresh, I get no errors. I get no player. I get the same thing I had before.

Am I trying to embed it in the wrong place? The wrong file? using the wrong tool?

What seems to you to be the most likely mistake/s I’m making?

When I view the source of this page, I see a BUNCH of code where Boriel’s player is embedded. Where did it come from? Is that auto-generated by WP?

Please help, I’ve double and triple checked everything I can think of and have read this entire list of comments to see if something would tell me what I’m doing wrong. Thanks!

Guess what? It wast the THEME I was using that was concealing the player! I was using Devenir En Gris, but when I switched to the Default theme, everything was fine. One things I DID have to do was find a site that was already using the player in a sidebar (I chose http://blog.marcus-kimpenhaus.de/ — Thank you Marcus!) and “View Source.” I then found the lines that applied to the player, copied them, made the necessary changes, and used the theme editor to Invoke. Phew!

I am sad though, because I don’t know enough about PHP and CSS to over-ride the style sheets of Devenir En Gris. That’s a really pretty theme.

Hi Boriel. I’ve been through about five MP3 player plugins for WordPress, and you’re is the only decent one out there.

I love the “Wide” mode that displays the cover art. I’m currently designing a website for an Artist, and would like to randomize the songs, but would also like to display the cover art for each different album.

My question is this: Is it possible to display the cover art ABOVE the track listing and MP3 controls, instead of to the left? Is it just a matter of modifying the code, or is this something that has to be built into the flash player? I want it this way because I am installing it on a sidebar that is less than 200px wide.

Thanks again for the great plugin!

hi! Great PLUGIN! You da man! I hate to ask, but I’ve been getting the same playlist order no matter what I’ve done and thought I’d probe you mind as to what you think the cause may be. Tried categories and various ways to invoke the player too. Still same playlist. If I use playlist.php, all music regardless of which category they are in play in a set and unchangable order. Even songs not in that category find thier way into the lineup. Usually alphabetically by song name. I tried the random feature as well within categories with no luck. Also, users are unable to label a category from the article posting section. The xspf button is really cool but I think it just invokes the player with no possible variables. Is that true? I know I can just use an external xspf based playlist and write a page about how to make a xspf based playlist for my users but I think it would be a shame to have go that route. Especially after all your hard work!

Is it possible to load a specific song into the player like with categories?
    … e.g. start(’title of song’)
    That would be great!!
    —————————-

I agree this would be a great feature. I’m using this on my blog and really love it! But I would like to be able to insert a specific .mp3 track into a blog post, that’s related to that particular post. Currently, I’m having to create a separate Category for each unique track inserted into a post; this will end up creating a LOT of Categories eventually.

Boriel, Is there any way to accomplish this, or maybe a future upgraded feature on the way?

A thought occurs to me: I know you’re very busy with _real_ work that brings in income, and your time for development is limited. And there are a lot of users that would like to see certain new features developed. If you were to set up a donation system for new features, combined with a new feature request survey system, then you could take small, “micro-donations” from users to compensate you for your development work. People could chip in $2.00 – $5.00 each, and when you get enough donations you would have the funds to support development of those new features.

You could even set up a system that keeps track of feature requests and displays the current tally on this site. Users could vote with their dollars (or euros, yen, etc.) to support the most popular feature requests.

Just a thought… A lot of users would be even happier with the new features, and you get compensated for your time and your work.

(Of course, another option would be to have an open source development group to develop the new features. I’m no programmer, but there’s probably others out there that would be interested…)

Again, Boriel, excellent job on this plugin! It’s easy to set up, fun to use, and very elegant in functionality and presentation. I love it.

    thanks,

    steve

PS: Another issue that I found, and someone else mentioned here, is certain tracks playing too slowly or too fast (related to a non-standard bitrate of the file, right?). If we could compensate for that somehow with the plugin, that would be very nice, instead of having to resample the file at a different bit rate. (I’m not even sure how to do that correctly to have it play at the correct speed.)

Probably a complicated bit of programming, though…

    s.

  168. [Spain] Boriel says:

Steve (163): Thanks for your message. You’re right, I’m currently hyperbusy, so both Captcha! and XSPF plugins are developing slower than desired.

I will take some of your ideas into account anyway.

Regaring your question, YES. It’s already possible to play a single song (or a range of them) without having to define a category (e.g. see “Happy Christmas” post. I use it there). When invoking the plugin start() function, it’s possible (this is an undocumented feature) to use special hidden parameters, in that way:

Go to the management songs panel. In the tracks table you will see an number ID for each track. This number is unique. You can tell the player to play song number # (or a couple of them) without having to define a category.

E.g. to play song #3, just write the following into post or page:

    <xspf>_start(FALSE, 'order=3')</xspf>

    Will load song #3 only.
Ranges are allowed using dash (-), and commas. E.g.:
    <xspf>_start(FALSE, 'order=7,5,3-6,1')</xspf>

    Will load song #7, #5, #3, #4, #5 (again), #6 and #1 in that order.

You can specify many params using the following syntaxis:
    <xspf>_start(FALSE, 'param1=val1&param2=val2&...')</xspf>

For example, width and height can be changeable on the fly inside body post, using this:
    <xspf>_start(FALSE, 'width=300&height=120')</xspf>

Will display the player with 300 pixels width and 120 pixels height.

    There are other params, like:
    autostart,
    mode = 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 (selects player mode: button, slim, etc…)

I was stating up a Wiki to write good documentation for everything.

I put some debug in xspf_player.php and I can see that the inline functions are being called correctly. However, they just remove the special tag. They don’t insert any code.

There’s no player. I tried this on two different sites. I tested it with two browsers. I get the same thing: nothing. When the page first begins to load an image placehold shows up briefly, then it goes away and there’s nothing there. The browser just spins and spins. With IE it continually (like, for hours) says 1 item left to load. With Firefox it says that it’s trying to download something from fpdownload.macromedia.com, but after a few minutes it stopped trying.

The XSPF player works fine for MP3s under 128K, but there is a bitrate catch: you must use a bitrate that is evenly divisible by 16. So, in XSPF player an mp3 with a bitrate of 40K will play too fast, sounding like chipmunks. But if you re-encode it to 32K, it will play fine.

Ohmigosh! It’s working now! After I moved the php file to the Plugins folder instead! Thank you very much!!!

  231. [United States] Craig Wood says:

Is there any way to have the plugin auto-detect songs in a particular folder. It’s just a pain in the butt to add songs to the playlist. I’ve seen other players that do this so I know it’s possible. I think that would be a feature worthy of implementing.

  232. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Pamela (#229):

It seems you installed xspf_player.php file in the wrong directory.
    Currently, the file is at:
    wp-content/plugins/xpsf_player/xpsf_player.php

    And it should be at:
    wp-content/plugins/xpsf_player.php

So, disable the plugin, move it to the right place, and re-enable it again.

    Try this and tell me.

  233. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Philip (#228):
Sorry for the delay. I’m also having problems in my site. Sigh! :(
I’ve checked your website. The plugins seems to be installed OK!
But the player is not working, because it points to a wrong URL mp3 file:
    http://www.deathway.com/msunderstood/wp-content/uploads/socialdistortion-storyofmylife.mp3

This URL gives “404 Error: Not Found”
You should place an mp3 over there.

Try uploading a file in the directory wp-content/uploads named
    ’socialdistortion-storyofmylife.mp3′

  234. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Craig (#232):

Currently not! However, I will take it into consideration for the next release. At less, importing songs from a remote site will be perfectly possible. ;)

  235. [United States] Philip says:

Thanks! Sorry to bother you with this. For the 10th time, I went back and looked in the directory and found the mp3 file. For the 10th time I read the name, and for the FIRST time, I saw that it was titled socialdistortion-storyofmylifeMP3.mp3 (caps added here to note what I missed). I had been reading over that first mp3 in the name like it wasn’t even there. I tried to follow your instructions to make every effort to figure it out first, and I still had a dumb error! Thanks for replying, though.
Oh and thanks for a great plugin!

  236. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Philip (#235):

I’ve just visited your site and it’s working now. Congratulations! :)

If you keep getting any error, empty your browser cache and reload.

  237. [Malaysia] Pamela says:

I’ve ‘widgetised’ my site & the player can’t seem to show up in the widgets which I’d created to put the codes into.

Is there a way to configure it show in the sidebar???

It was working fine in my previous theme but I’ve just upgraded to suit WP 2.0.

    Thanks.

  238. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Yes, it is.

As stated in the README.TXT, use the following code:

    <?php xspf_player::start(); ?>

This code must go in your theme.
Since you changed your theme, you must reedit it and put that code into the sidebar section.

I also have some problem running this plugin in wordpress for the 1st time but after make some reading to this website, I found the way to solve it.

Right now I plan to play a specific song in a specific post. Is there any way to do that ? I can run the plugin in a post but look like the xspf player will load all of the song from song id:1 to id last.

Hope anyone have an idea to resolve this.

  240. [Malaysia] akim says:

   ;-)

  241. [Spain] Boriel says:

Akim, you can do that using the undocumented features.
Try this code in your post:

    <xspf>_start(FALSE, 'order=x')</xspf>

Where x is the song #id you can read in the manager panel.

E.g. Suppose you want to play song #1, try:
    <xspf>_start(FALSE, ‘order=1′)</xspf>

Multiple songs are allowed (comma separated):
    <xspf>_start(FALSE, ‘order=7,1,3,7′)</xspf>

Will play song #7, #1, #3 and again #7, in that specific order.

  242. [Malaysia] akim says:

Thanks a lot for the quick reply Boriel.
Yeah, the code that you give me work perfectly.

At first it give me an error because I only copy and paste from your command post:

E.g. Suppose you want to play song #1, try:
    _start(FALSE, ‘order=1′)

But then I refer back here and found out a typo for ‘. This is another great features. I should save this command in xspf README. Thanks again Boriel.

I’m having the same problem with other guys of the player not showing up. Is that a frequent bug or anything? Also, in terms of continuous playing, is that even possible? When you move, doesn’t it reload the entire page which reloads the player as well? I thought the only way to prevent the music from stopping is to have a separate frame with the music. I may be wrong, since I’m not a php whiz, but it was just my input.

Yes, It’s compatible with WP 2.0.4 (in fact, I’ve just updated to WP 2.0.4 at the moment of writing this).

On the other hand, I’ve checked your site and have seen you finally got it working. Congratulations! :)

  280. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Roscoe (#270), bArtAA (#275) & milo317 (#317):

This is not a problem of the plugin, but a problem of system design: Each time the user clicks on a link, the *entire* page is reloaded (and the player within it will be stopped and restarted).

There’s no solution from the plugins side I could implement :( but puting it into a frame :( or a popup window.

But there is another solution: A Wordpress AJAXed theme (WEB 2.0), so when the user clicks on something only the related part is loaded.

Some users have implemented AJAX themes on WP (see bloxpress.org, for example). You should look into that direction, I guess…

  281. [Netherlands] bArtAA says:

    Boriel, thanks for the link.
Can you tell me if this AJAX is required so not the whole page is reloaded but only the main-frame ?

  282. [Spain] Boriel says:

    bArtAA (#281):

I’m not very skilled in AJAX, but yes, this should be implemented in AJAX, but I guess It could be much harder to do it that way. Unfortunately I don’t know how it could be done. :(

My calendar is implemented in AJAX (see my site), but it’s just a plugin, I haven’t done anything. And it does Just the opposite: It refresh only the box content and each time you click a link, the box is also restored. :(

Another solution is tu use a top frame. So only the remaining frame will be reloaded.

  283. [United States] stikguy says:

    Boriel,
You do a great job with your support.
    My question…
I’m pretty sure i’ve got everything loaded.
The quicktab loads….the slim player scrolling ‘loading playlist’ into my post. When I put the ID of the loaded mp3 in the ()….nothing plays.
I seem to be missing the connection from the management page. (the mp3 plays fine if I click on it there.

    Am I doing something stoopid?

  284. [Switzerland] swiss420 says:

First off great work. I added it to a modiefied Neo-Sapien Theme into the top-menu.php and it works great even switching pages the Music Continues to play. Now Implementing in a post fails. I know it is my misstake and I will work on it till I have it but any pointers would be greatly appreciated. What happens is when I add the Code through the WP HTML Editor it strips the and writes only _start()as Text.

As I said works great in the Theme integrated but I would like to have it under Sample in the Wide View.

Second Problem in Preview and Theme integrated the Color does not change. Blog integrated I can not test until I get it to work. :)

Third is more a general question. Under XSPF Player plugin Setup > Player Mode: should there be anything showing? There is allot of Space but no Text, input or anything else. Further down there is the Preview: and XSPF Flash Player URL: showing.

    Version Info:
    WP 2.0.4
    XSPF 3.1
    PHP 5.0.4

Again thanks for the great work.

  285. [Switzerland] swiss420 says:

Ok I just figured out what I did wrong with the Post entry of the Player. I had to deactivate the WYSIWYG-Editor. That solves Problem number 1 but the other Problems persist. See last post.

  288. [Spain] Boriel says:

    William (#287):

Yes, there is an “autostart” option, both for a reproduction list (Categories) and the entire song collection. For the Reproduction list, go to Management Panel, XSPF PLAYER section, edit Category you want to autostart and enable it.

For the entire song collection, go to the Options Panel, XSPF Player and enable this option (Autostart).

I had the same trouble with the files not playing and the player not showing up, with only the ‘loading movie’ at the bottom. I got it to work somehow by changing the foreground and background color of the player. As soon as I did this and refreshed my page, it worked fine. I don’t know why that worked.

Now I have a question. Is there a way to make this plugin a widget so I can move it around? It’s in the top left corner of my 3-column template, and for some reason, the center column is shifted down 1 or 2 carriage returns.

    Thanks for the good software!

  291. [United States] David says:

I figured it out. Get this plugin – execphp.zip here: http://ottodestruct.com/blog/2006/04/09/fun-with-widgets/

Once activated as a widget, it lets you put PHP code into the configure box. Put the tag in the textarea, and remove it from the index template file.

Now you can put the player anywhere!

  294. [France] mll says:

Hi Boriel, thanks for the cool plugin.

I’d like to play a single song without using the songs database, something that would be like this:
    _start(FALSE, "mode=1&song_url=http://mydomain.com/mypath/myfile.mp3")
would display a button (because of mode=1) that will play http://mydomain.com/mypath/myfile.mp3 when pressed.

XSPF allows for the song_url argument, so I guess one could easily tweak your plugin, right ? If you have no time to do it yourself, could you please point me to the part of code that need changing ?

    Many thanks in advance.

Invoke the player anywhere into your template pages using:
    … what is “templete”
I suppose it not just the template.php. If I will have the player in some posts, what file should I put the code in?

In the Management Panel, XSPF PLAYER section, below the boxlist to chose player NOTHING i shows up. Th text is there to the left:
Player Mode and Preview, etc – but Explorer never gets finished. The flag is moving in the
upper right corner all the time, and the green box at the bottom on the page never gets finished.

Can anyone kindly help me on this?

  297. [Sweden] K Akeby says:

I maybe should mention also that in the in the Management Panel Upoad File >> Write and when I upoad a file there,it says:
“The uploaded file could not be moved to.”

So no file is uploaded, if is was uploaded, then in what map?

Regarding XSPF PLAYER… if I go to the link where I have uploaded an mp3-file, it will been played in Media player.

I have put this in a post:

    _start(sdsdsdsd)

    sdsdsdsd = a name of a category…

  298. [Sweden] K Akeby says:

What is written in my previous post on what the code was, that I have put in the post is not true – I did not put that in the post – the code that I was wrote was as instead exactly as it says in the readme.txt and with sdsdsdsd added as the name for the category. I’m having problems with some mp3 files on the player, but not others.

Some play, some don’t. One of the mp3 tunes played at extra fast speed (sounded like chipmonks on speed).

All the ‘problem’ mp3 files play OK on RealPlayer and WindowsMedia Player — but not on the plug-in.

Any idea why this is happening?

    2. Now, as many themes are now using widgets I tried adding to a text widget but for some reason this does not work and the player does not show up. Am I being too simplistic here? is there any way to use this plugin as a text widget?

Applogies for the lack of info in my previous post I didn’t realise that the comment fields would be read as true HTML.

I’ve tried various methods to get the player to play a specific playlist.

    i.e.

    object type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”400″ height=”170″
    data=”http://yourdomain.com/xspf_player.swf?playlist_url=http://yourdomain.com/yourplaylistlist.xspf”>

    _start(FALSE, ‘width=300&height=120′)_start(FALSE, mode=’3′, playlist=” ‘width=300&height=120′)

  425. [Portugal] SDark says:

Meckanix this is what I use:

    _start(FALSE, ‘mode=2&width=200&height=15&order=2,5,1-4′)

The portion that allows you to define the playlist is the order portion.

by entering order=2,5,1-4 it means that you will have a playlist with the following songs in order:
    (2,5,1,2,3,4)

I already mentioned a small patch to Boriel that could ease the understanding of those functions or at least help to tell users what are the fields you can mess with. You can also check the wiki for more info on the subject.

The patch can be a bit messy but that is what I use to remember what are the correct names of the tags.

Make sure you also use an apropriate width and height so that you get the playlist like aspect if you want it.

    Cheers

  426. [United Kingdom] Meckanix says:

    SDark (#424)

Thanks for that. Works a treat. The only slight downside at the moment is that it’s still listing in alphabetical order and is ignoring the ordering I’ve applied

i.e. due to alphabetising it’s plyaing them like

ID 5 Dragon Child – Chris Brookes
ID 4 Home – Chris Brookes
ID 1 Reject – Chris Brookes
ID 3 Terminal – Chris Brookes
ID 2 Tiriel – Chris Brookes

    Instead of

ID 1 Reject – Chris Brookes
ID 2 Tiriel – Chris Brookes
ID 3 Terminal – Chris Brookes
ID 4 Home – Chris Brookes
ID 5 Dragon Child – Chris Brookes

But I’m not too fused about that right, now, as the player is up and working (see http://www.simonbeevers.co.uk for more info)

    To Meckanix & others:

You should not use the parameter “order” if you have a playlist already defined. The first parameter “FALSE” must be replaced by the playlist name if you wan to use it.

“Playlist” are called “categories”, but they are the same!

    So use:
    _start('rock_and_roll', 'mode=3&width=450&height=155')

To show that play list (the songs will be played using the order, etc. defined in that category).

Usually the “order” is not needed. It’s more useful to play a single song inside a post, for example.

  431. [United States] DSK says:

When I first installed, I couldn’t changed the Player Mode, it was/is stuck on Button. When trying to change it, I get:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class xspf_player in D:\wamp\www\wp-content\plugins\xspf_player\xspf_player_class.php on line 25

So I deleted all of the XSPF files, including the database tables, and reinstalled. Now not only do I still get the previous error, but now I get database errors saying wordpress.wp_xspf_player’ doesn’t exist. Which is true, but why didn’t it create them on the second install?

Is there also a way to manually change the Player Type by editing the files? I semi-changed it, but I don’t believe I changed the right variable.

    Thanks.

  432. [United States] Christopher says:

    Hi,

I’ve just downloaded the plug-in, and have used it before. This time, I’m running a local installation of WordPress to test everything I use out on first to make sure it’s working. Well the plug-in worked on my local installation, but once I replicated all my settings on my actual blog (http://quietcitizen.net/), it won’t show up.

    Every time I put in the code in a page to show up, as I did on my local installation, the [XSPF] tags will disappear, leaving: _start(’early_recordings’);

I thought it may be a permission thing, but I changed all the permissions and there’s no difference. I don’t know why it works on my local installation with MAMP, and not on my actual blog.

  433. [Spain] Boriel says:

    DSK (#431):

You shouln’t delete the tables! :-(
Anyway, execute this SQL statement in your SQL database:

    DELETE FROM wp_options WHERE option_name = 'xspf_player_version';

And the error tables should be gone.

On the other hand, the “Fatal error:” is a problem of some wordpress setup where some files are included twice. Try to download the plugin (Zip file) again. I’ve just updated the file, so you should not have this problem.

    1) Ability to change skin layout

3)Ability to select autoload (would look nice in posts if the album art loaded automatically without the user click.

  469. [Portugal] SDark says:

The use of the player in http://www.boutell.com/xspf/ might solve some of the issues mentioned here but has some limitations, if improperly used, that the original doesn’t.

Anyway, Boriel I suggest you give it a try but default autoresume to 0. This way the player will work the way the old one does but has the capability of resume if the user needs it.

I’m not using this plugin to have sound always playing on my website and so I don’t need the autoresume feature at the moment. But for those who are this is a very neat feature.

Anyway, since other users, like me, use the plugin with several copies on the same page, having autoresume defaulted to 1 can be quite a big problem.

With that said. Thumbs up for Enhanced XSPF but with default autoresume=0

    Cheers

  470. [Ireland] Conor McCarthy says:

SDark, have you managed to use the Enhanced XSPF player in conjunction with this plugin? I replaces the swf, but I can’t get the plugin to pass the autoresume argument. If I add it is just doesn’t get put in the webpage code, although if I put other args they do get put in the webpage code. Do you know where the plugin code passing the arguments is?

  471. [Portugal] SDark says:

Conor, I haven’t tried because I’m not interested in this functionality at the moment. However Boriel will take a look at this whenever he has some free time. In the meantime you can either try to understand the code yourself or wait for the beta update.

If you want to give it a try yourself I think the code for this is on xspf_player_class.php, but since different options have different parsing codes, it may not be that easy if you don’t know where to insert the modifications.

maybe open the player in a a pop up but i dont know how i could make that…
Thank you for helping me

  475. [Portugal] SDark says:

Roxx the current flash player doesn’t have the capabilities to resume play where it was left. There is an enchanced version to be tested in the next release, but it only allows you to resume the place where the song last stopped. You can read the latest comments for more info.

Aside from this, it’s impossible to keep a player running if the page is reloaded. I know that using frames you can achieve results, however this is not the way things work in wordpress and still the frame cannot be reloaded or else the player will restart…
Even if you use the code in the sidebar, since is not a frame, it’s reloaded whenever you navigate to anywhere else. This is not a limitation of this plugin nor the player but the way things work.

I have seen websites that have some sort of dynamic code but can still keep the players or streamers running even if you change pages, but I have no idea how that works and if those are camouflaged frames…

  476. [Spain] Boriel says:

    SDark (#475):

Thanks, SDark. :) You’re right. It’s exactly what you say.

This feature it’s not related to the plugin, but to the way WP and HTTP protocol works. The only way I can figure out to make the player not to stop is using an WP-AJAX theme.

It’s beyond of the scope of this page. So people interested on it should investigate themselves. I’m redesigning my theme to become AJAX-aware but it’s a rather tedious process. :(

This is why you don’t see my music player in the front page. I stop using it until I enable AJAX in my site.

  477. [Portugal] SDark says:

    Just a personal note:
I’m not a fan of websites that use players that start without the user interaction. The old midi system doesn’t work in Linux, and the current fashion in the web is live radio streams, mp3 players, and other kinds of stream players. This makes the navigation on some websites very annoying and very bandwidth consuming.

I prefer websites that have something like.
“Listen to our music selection – click here” and a pop-up shows up or players that start loading the songs only if user wants it.

Improper use includes players that are hidden, start playing and user can’t stop them, start downloading stuff from the web automatically, caching data and whatever…(wasting bandwidth) Even youtube is annoying because starts caching the videos as soon as you enter the video page, pausing it won’t stop the download process and there is no way to stop it except leaving the page. If you want to read a comment, you have to download the movie too.

It’s a wise choice to leave the decision to the user, specially if they are only looking for something to read.

All options have been set correctly, i’m sure (the players works on the options page), but still the plugin doesnt generated the code, but instead just displays the text that has been in between the code tags. so instead of showing a button it shows _start(FALSE, ‘order=2′) in the post. I edited the text in the code tab, not in the visual tab. Even with the visual editor disabled in my profile, it doesnt work. It doesn’t matter if it is created by IE or FF. The theme doesn’t not affect this either, also the default theme encouters this problem

Im on Wordpress 2.2, PhP 5.0.4 and MySQL 4.1.22 and have no idea about a solution…

I love how this plugin works and i would love it to work on my musicblog as well!

    hoping for some help!

  498. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Kristiaan (497):

    1) PHP 5.0.x is buggy. Upgrade to 5.1.x whenever possible. In fact there were even some syntax changes in 5.0.x that might made the plugin incompatible (though I try to avoid this as possible). 5.0.x branch has been abandoned.

    2) The plugin only allows to use embedding code to admin user for security reasons. If you have more than one user in your WP system, try the admin one. This should be already fixed by version 3.0.

    3) The plugin uses the function ob_start and related functions. See ob_start help, and also uses eval function. This might be disabled in your system (I’m going to write a test for it). This is used when the player is inserted within a post or page. You should see the player in your sidebar, for example, if using it in your template. A simple test: If you can see the plugin on your Options panel, and can play some music on it, then the plugin is Ok, and this must be the reason.

Anyway keep in telling me whether this helps you or not.

See if the player changes and if the menu still shows up when you right click it. I’m pretty sure you are still using the original “not-enhanced” version. If you only use the FALSE, autoresume=’1′ options then you should be fine.

  509. [Switzerland] Elena says:

    ==>@SDark

Thank you very much for answering me! ;)
Ok, I understand this patch is a Beta, but I didn’t know if I wrote right the code?

I invoke the player in my wordpress-template sidebar.php with:
    <?php xspf_player::start(FALSE, autoresume='1'); ?>

PHP isn’t my power-suite so, I don’t know if maybe the diffrence semicolon is important for the code?

    Have a nice evening! ;)
    So long

    Elena

  510. [Spain] Boriel says:

Elena (#509): It’s not autoresume=’1′, but ‘autoresume=1′ (notice the quotes).

On the other hand, I’m going to close comments on this page. People is asking the same questions over and over again.

The forum is more suitable for this matters. :)

  514. [Netherlands] Peter says:

    Still works with WP 2.2.1

Any news about the issue in my comment # 457 ?

  515. [Spain] Boriel says:

    Peter (#457, #513 , #514):

I supposed someone already had answered you: It’s not an issue of the plugin, but of your template.

If you don’t want this error to repeat again, you have to invoke the player within your template this way (php 5.x):

    <?php
    if method_exists('xspf_player', 'start')
        xspf_player::start();
    ?>
  516. [Spain] Boriel says:

It makes nonsense to me, that people ask the same questions over and over again, and don’t read or search this page wich (by the way) is getting heavier and heavier.

This is why I’ve closed comments here.
