Memoirs of a Geisha

Movies

Movie based on a true story. It shows the life of a Geisha in Japan during the 2nd World War.

I haven’t read the book (and, as it usually happens, people who did has found the movie somewhat disappointing), but loved the movie, and found it truly amazing.

The fact is that there’s been some controversy in Asia (in Japanese and China people), for being two chinese (and not japanese) actresses playing Geishas. Both Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh have already play together in another famous movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee, that brings us another succesful movie this year, Brokeback Mountain (which I’ll be watching soon).

Synopsis:
Two sisters were sold to bondage by their elder parents, because they couldn’t afford to take care of them. They’re later resold and finally separated. One of them, the younger, has blue eyes (something rather odd for an Asian girl), which catchs everybody ’s attention.
More details about the older sister (spoiler) ▼

During her childhood, she bumbed into the Chairman of a Japanese company, that brings her a warm and lovely moment of hope in such a world of misery. Since that moment, the girl will direct her life to reencounter that man.

She kept on living in poverty and misery as a slave, till she is tutorized by another very well-known Geisha, named Mameha (Michelle Yeoh), that will transform her in one of the most important Geishas of Japan.

But the 2nd world war, the atomic bomb and other events of the umpredictable destiny will bring new changes…

A beautiful story, with a nice romantic touch.
