After Delta

News

Delta tropical storm has passed. It looked like it was stronger than expected: In my city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife (the capital of the island), wind reached 140Km/h (almost 87 miles per hour), which resulted in several damages to cars, traffic lights, streetlights, trees, and pylons. This situation is generalized all over the islands, which at this moment is almost completely into darkness. Some parts, like my area have power lines restored.

In the higher areas of the island (Teide national park) anemometers measured strong winds much higher than 250Km/h (more than 155.25 miles/hour - stronger than Katrina); natural monument El Dedo de Dios (Finger of God) in the island of Grand Canaria has been destroyed. I think I’ve never seen something like that before.

I’ve taken some photos of my living area which will give a better idea of the current situation:

  • Anaga avenue, with several trees pulled out, and curious people taking photos.
    Avenida Anaga - 29 Nov. 2005

Remaining pics shows other views of my area and the avenue.

Delta approaching

News

It seems the tropical storm Delta is approching here, the Canaries, with a wind speed of 100Km/h (about 62 Miles/hour). It’s not that hard compared with the desaster of Katrina, but people here are used to have a soft and warm weather for the entire the year (winters are a bit cooler than people thinks, however).

It’s supposed to arrive tonight. I hope my monitor won’t be struck by a lightning again, as it was some years ago. :?

Update: a friend of mine, Khertz, has given me the URL of a public cam. It takes the street next to my home almost in realtime.

Podcast: Triunfa en Internet

Podcast

Triunfa en Internet (Spanish for Triumph in the Internet) is a Spanish Radio program broadcasted via Podcast. I’ve made a little participation in Program nº 37, Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 is a relative new term and it’s about highly collaborative webs: Wikis, Podcasting, Folksonomies, AJAX, RSS are words currently getting on fashion. We comment on all of them briefly, and what this means for this next generation web. Public can later leave their opinion in the forum.

I must confess I was a little nervous :P but in the end the result was nice in my humble opinion ;). Thanks a lot to Carlos and Mar (the other two voices), for leaving me to participate in the program.

Update: If you can speak Spanish, and want to hear, click here:

Sony to install hidden software in your system with music CD

Music

If you buy a music CD from Sony, beware: I got astounded after reading this post at Slashdot, in which they say that if you insert a Sony music CD in your Windows OS Computer, a RootKit is automatically installed.

A RootKit is a program which hides itself from your Computer OS and of course, from you. In some ways it’s very similar to a trojan and, once installed, it becomes really hard to get rid of. In fact, Sony’s version does not seems to be uninstallable (you can ask for its removal at Sony web, though).

Mark Russinovich revealed it in his web. He’s a software IT expert programmer and technician and tells how annoying and difficult was to remove the program from his computer while leaving it stable.
